At the core of what I believe about the end times is the Great Commission in Matthew 28:18-20.
And Jesus came and spoke unto them, saying, All power [authority] is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, behold, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world [age]. Amen. (Matthew 28:18-20 KJV)
You may notice a few differences in the above passage. Most modern versions say, “make disciples of all nations.” While this isn’t a particularly bad translation, it does ask the question: is this talking about discipling nations or individual people? I would say both. The KJV has the phrase “teach all nations.” Were we to look at the Greek underlying word, in modern vernacular this passage would say, “Disciple all nations.”
If the Great Commission has to do with discipling nations, then it’s entire character changes. But not as many people might say. The commission is founded on the authority of Christ. His Lordship is what we are proclaiming to the nations not a theocratic government that is ruled by a spiritual elite (as some groups imagine). The way of the kingdom is as a seed, it begins in human hearts and spreads from there. Individuals effect families, families effect cities, and cities effect nations (people groups).
Of course every sphere of society will be changed, but it starts with individuals. So if a governor is saved, he would be expected to act as a servant of Christ. A school teacher is to proclaim that which lines up with Scripture. A musician is to use his gifts for the glory of God. The Word of God has more to tell us than how to be saved from hell, it teaches us how to live in this present evil age. We are to be the salt of the earth, the light of the world. Our calling, whether we are a painter, engineer, senator, actor, professor, gardner, or plumber, is to take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ. And by the obedience of Christ I mean God’s written Word.
We are to disciple all the nations, baptizing them, and teaching them to observe all that Christ commanded us to. That is a powerful commission and I believe it will succeed before Christ returns. He has guaranteed it’s success through His authority and Presence.
